If creating a successful online home business from your passions or hobbies appeals to you, then niche affiliate marketing is probably your best choice of business models for making money online. Affiliate marketing and niche affiliate marketing go hand in hand, but there are some differences in the two.

Affiliate Marketing Basics

As most everyone who spends any time online knows, affiliate marketing is simply promoting another person’s/company’s products or services.

These people (or businesses) have products that they have already created, which means the work has already been done for you, and when you sign on as an affiliate for them you are paid a commission each time you refer a sale from your site.

This sounds like a very easy process, and in theory it is. However, in order to generate sales, it is important that you give good endorsements of the products or services you are promoting and that you have a good marketing campaign in place in order to bring potential customers to your site. Don’t count on throwing a few affiliate banners and links on your site and having customers flocking to your offerings. This lack of good promotion rarely produces the results you desire and will only leave you disappointed and disillusioned.

Niche Affiliate Marketing Vs. Affiliate Marketing

Having said that, let’s discuss the differences in ‘niche’ affiliate marketing versus regular affiliate marketing. When you promote products/services that are targeted to reach a specific, smaller group of people, this is known as niche affiliate marketing. Therefore, for optimum results your site as well as the products you are promoting should all be closely related to this same tight little niche.

For instance, if you own a website where you promote all kinds of golf equipment – from golf ‘balls’ to golf ‘bags’ – this would be considered affiliate marketing.

However, if you decide instead to promote to a more refined audience by offering only golf ‘clubs’ from your site, this would be ‘niche’ affiliate marketing. You could even refine your niche further by offering only ‘Callaway’ golf clubs.

For maximum effectiveness (and profits) when potential customers type your keywords (golf clubs) into the search engines and arrive at your site, the ads and promotions you have displayed on your site should reflect your specific niche. If your niche is ‘golf clubs’, your visitors are typically not going to be interested in seeing ads about hunting or fishing gear. The number of visitors to your site may be fewer than if you were offering a number of different products, but they will also be more targeted and more apt to click on your offers, which is how you will make money online.

Another example of niche affiliate marketing would be, for example, instead of focusing on people with pets, focus on cat owners who want to feed their pets a natural diet. Dog owners who want to buy sports-themed clothing for Fido and Spot is much more focused than ‘pet owners’. If you can find a niche that’s looking specifically for the product you’re promoting, and that niche doesn’t have a lot of competition marketing to it already, your chances of making sales will go up a lot higher.

Narrowing the number of people you market to may seem counter-intuitive at first. After all, conventional wisdom says you want to reach the largest number of people possible in order to get sales. However, in affiliate marketing, this strategy could limit your income.

The Internet is a big place and there are thousands of people competing with you. If you just focus on broad categories of people, such as ‘adults’ or ‘homeowners’, you’ll probably get lost in the vast sea of other people promoting to this same enormous group. By narrowing your focus, you’ll get traffic that‘s much more likely to convert.

Make Money Online By Providing Value

And on a side note here, in order to be considered reliable and trustworthy in your chosen niche, you must put some thought and research into the content you display on your site, as well as the site itself. You will earn much more trust and respect by offering useful, original content than if you just throw rehashed junk on your site that you have copied from elsewhere on the internet and that has no value to your visitors.

Providing a site that is helpful and inviting will make it obvious to your visitors that you take pride in your business, and they in turn will be much more likely to stick around long enough to take notice of your affiliate banners and links. Your visitors are not going to put any trust in you or the products you promote if you don’t come across as reliable and professional to them.

When you put some thought, along with effort and research into your niche affiliate marketing business, the potential for success and making money online is great. The most important thing is finding and getting the attention of the perfect candidate for your affiliate products, and providing them something useful to gain their trust and their business.
