Affiliate Marketing, often thought to be one of the easiest and most effective ways to earn money online, is not as simple as it appears to be in most cases.  There is a lot of work that goes into any successful business, and affiliate marketing is no different.  The competition in this business is grueling, so to be able to set yourself apart from everyone else will take some effort and persistence.

Having a willingness to learn everything you can about affiliate marketing, and utilizing the proper tools and skills will be necessary to operating an effective, profitable online business, and if you don’t have these things, it is important that you acquire them.  Let’s discuss some of the more important tools and qualities that one needs in order to be successful at affiliate marketing.

Affiliate Marketing Website

Having your own professional looking, user-friendly website is the first step in building a successful affiliate marketing business.  Your website will be your store front which will appeal to your visitors and encourage them to click on the product or service links you have displayed, hopefully making a purchase – or it won’t.  Therefore, it is very important that you make an effort to build a solid foundation – website – that will appeal to your prospects before you move on to other aspects of the business.

People Search For Information – Not Products

The content that you provide on your affiliate marketing website will also be of utmost importance.  Remember that most people come to the internet searching for information, and not necessarily to make a purchase.   So providing interesting, useful content that is relevant to the topic of your website will not only boost your reputation online as someone who has an interesting website – perhaps even providing needed solutions to someone’s problems – but your content can also help you to achieve higher rankings with the search engines through proper usage of your site’s keywords.

In general, people love to read interesting, helpful articles, and this is an excellent way to establish yourself as a credible expert in your field.  The more credible and trustworthy you are, the better your chances of building a strong consumer base.  If you are endorsing a particular product, for instance, people need to know that they can trust your opinions before they are going to buy from you.

Offer Incentives – Build A List

Offering incentives that will be of value to potential customers who come to your site is another way of setting yourself apart from the masses, and encouraging your visitors to come back again.  Because of the high competition in affiliate marketing, you must use any means possible to bring attention to your business, and incentives can help in that regard.  Offering these freebies in return for signing up for your free newsletter or e-zine is also an excellent way to build an opt-in email list so that you can keep in touch with your prospects through email, and present other offers to them that you have found to be helpful to you.

You Must Have Targeted Traffic

Attracting highly targeted traffic to your website should be at the top of your list of things to do to insure a successful affiliate marketing business.  Without traffic you will have no business – so launching an aggressive campaign to attract visitors to your site is a must.  Being at the top of the search engine listings is of course the cheapest way to get traffic, and one of the most important factors in getting high rankings with the search engines is having a lot of links pointing back to your site – so link building should take up a substantial amount of your time.

Link building can be accomplished in a number of ways, but one of the most popular and effective ways is through article submissions, which doesn’t cost you anything.  Many website owners either do not have the time to write their own material or they may not have a talent for writing, and they also don’t want to pay to have articles written for them – however they must obtain the content to go on their websites from somewhere.

As a result, many of these people choose to visit article banks (directories) to get the material for their sites – and this material comes in the form of articles that you (and others) have written and submitted to the directories with back links to your website embedded in the content.  You will need to write unique, original articles that are relevant to your site’s theme and include links to your website within the content, then submit each article to as many sites as you can find – and there are tons of them out there that you can submit to. Rather than write each article from scratch, many people just take the same original articles they write for their own site and re-write them so that the article is unique, to avoid the duplicate content issue.

Here is a partial list of some of the most popular article submission directories that you can submit your articles to for maximum exposure:

There are many others – just do a search for “article directories” – and have at it.

Not only are you pulling traffic to your site by embedding your links in the articles you are submitting, but the articles also help with your page ranking which will eventually get your website placed higher in the search listings.  It’s a win-win situation.  When other website owners link to your articles, or use them on their sites – they will have the benefit of fresh content for their site, and you will have the benefit of the link back to your site.

In addition to having the tools mentioned here, healthy doses of discipline, patience, creativity, resourcefulness, persistence and determination will all be essential to maximize your earning potential and help you to stick with your affiliate marketing business through the ups and downs that you will surely encounter throughout the process.  You most likely will not see the results you hope for right away, but if you hang in there and keep working at it, the sky is the limit in this business, and you are in control of just how high you are willing to take it!

Venturing out on your own to start a home based business on the internet working for yourself, especially in affiliate marketing, is the dream of many people.  But quite often, we are stopped in our tracks by the reality that the majority of small startup businesses collapse within the first year.

The two major factors that tend to hold most people back when they think about starting their own business are number one – money, and number two – the high risk, which are certainly legitimate concerns.  Typical brick and mortar businesses, even small ones, require a substantial amount of capital to get up and running, and the risk factor is even scarier.

One type of business that takes all of the risk out of starting your own business is affiliate marketing. If you are a self-motivated individual with a natural knack for sales or marketing, and are prepared to work hard, an affiliate marketing business can be a very lucrative venture for you.

But as with anything else in life, you have to be cautious and have at least a little bit of skepticism, especially in the initial stages of creating your business.  For instance, there are so many courses and seminars out there that claim to hold all the secrets of instant wealth, promising you all the tools you will need to have a successful affiliate marketing business and become the next online millionaire.

What Is Niche Affiliate Marketing?

In most cases, people who attend these events thinking that this is just what they need to help their new business to grow – leave disappointed.   When you factor in the fees for these seminars/courses, which are usually quite expensive, plus the associated costs such as travel and hotel expenses, you can end up spending quite a bit of money for something that, more often than not, is going to be very little if any help to you and your business.

The person who is giving these seminars/courses is normally on a promotional tour promoting their latest, greatest, must-have tool, software, book, or whatever – and while they often do give out information while you’re there, their ultimate goal is to sell you their products.   The truth is that everything you learn from the seminar is most likely written in their book, and you can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars by just buying the book rather than shelling out the big bucks for the event – if you feel like you need their product.

Educating yourself about affiliate marketing before you jump in with both feet is very important – just as you would with any other business – but your best resources will be books that you can buy from retail sites such as Amazon or eBay for a fraction of the cost of a seminar.  There are tons of books out there that offer step by step guides on how to get your affiliate marketing business up and running, and they usually provide valuable insights on different aspects of the business.

An Affiliate Marketing Education For Free!

Another invaluable resource that you should utilize is the internet.  You can find loads of information right here online that won’t cost you a dime, and chances are you’ll learn just as much here as you would at those pricey seminars.  Just do a search for “affiliate marketing” and you will have massive amounts of information at your fingertips, much of it very useful.

Lots of affiliate marketers publish their own newsletters or magazines that you can sign up for from their websites, and most of these are free.  These people are generally in a position to give valuable advice and tips on the affiliate marketing business since that is what they do every day, some of them having been in the business for years.  Even though most people on the internet are there strictly for the money and have no interest in helping the new person get ahead, there really are a few webmasters who are very knowledgeable about affiliate marketing, and they are willing to share  a lot of their knowledge and experiences with you for free.

And finally, the support that affiliate marketers receive from the merchants they are affiliated with is another great advantage of having an affiliate marketing business.  The more money you make from promoting their products, the more money they make – so obviously it is to their advantage for their affiliates to succeed.

The support that you are likely to receive from these merchants, in addition to the banners and other advertising materials you need to promote their products, might include advice on how to place their advertisements on your website, and some great tips to help you in your marketing campaigns.  They will also most likely provide someone or some place that you can go to for additional support should you need it.

The bottom line here is to take advantage of all the free material and affiliate marketing resources that are readily available to you if you are considering an affiliate marketing business.  Before you consider shelling out your hard earned money for courses and seminars that may provide very little in the way of helping your business, sign up for free newsletters from reputable sites related to this business, and learn as much as you can from people who are already doing the business everyday.  Some of the best and most helpful information you can get is available for free.

The process of starting an affiliate marketing business (or whatever business model you have chosen) requires a lot of hard work and persistence, along with lots of skills and the proper tools – in spite of what you may have read elsewhere on the internet, especially if you are serious about having a successful online business and not just a hobby.

However, if you don’t happen to be the “techie” type, that doesn’t mean that you can’t still enjoy the rewards of starting your own business online, and you don’t have to buy into all the hoopla that is being hawked all over the internet just trying to get money from people who are new and feel like they have to buy every ebook and ecourse offered out there to learn how to build a successful business.

I don’t know how many of you have heard of Ken Evoy and SiteBuildIt, but it is a suite of internet tools that reportedly will save you many hours of your time building your internet business because you won’t need to learn HTML, FTP, domain hosting, search engine optimization and so forth, in order to build a website. How’s that for a dream come true?

In a nutshell, SiteBuildIt is purported to be an all-in-one site-building, hosting, marketing, and site brainstorming, step-by-step system of software tools that makes it much easier for even the most technically challenged amongst us to have a professional looking, traffic-pulling, income producing website, designed to accommodate “newbies” to internet business, as well as sophisticated webmasters.

Clearly, designing and creating a website can be difficult for someone who is not technical-minded and who does not have graphical or programming skills. But if you are willing to put in the time and effort necessary to learn what is involved in building an internet business, there probably is no need for you to fork over the moola that sites like SiteBuildIt charge.

Everything you need to know and every tool you need to use to build a business online can be found right here under your nose and it doesn’t have to cost you a thing but your time.

The Perfect Blueprint For Starting Your Own Business – NOT!

Two years ago when I decided I wanted to stay at home and have my own internet business, I was just like many others who come here hoping to find that “perfectly laid out blueprint” that will launch them into a successful online business. I had no clue what to do, where to turn, or even where to go to try and learn what to do. I was willing to do whatever work needed to be done, I just had no idea “what work”!

I looked at so many different “programs” that promised to be just the ticket I was looking for, that I was soon in information overload, more confused than ever and knowing that I could not afford to buy every single “business in a box” offered, and yet I didn’t know which one – if any – might be helpful to me.

I don’t remember how I found out about SiteBuildIt several months later, but I sure remember the excitement I felt at the thought of not having to go through that dreaded learning curve, and having someone to “provide everything I needed, including 24-hour technical support that was second to none”, and I didn’t even need programming skills.  Are you kidding me? Sign me up!

With Site BuildIt, I was going to have more than 70 “programmed” modules and sub-modules (whatever that meant), they would cover all of the tedious, technical jobs that are normally required in the process of creating an online business, and my primary focus would be on building my business. Yup, I had found my magic blueprint – and yes I forked over the $300 (that I certainly couldn’t afford) for my brand new “all-in-one business in a box” so to speak, that was going to make this process so much easier for me to get through.

Well, I’m not sure exactly why my big plans of a successful affiliate marketing business through SiteBuildIt bombed, but I’m relatively sure that because I was so new and inexperienced, my expectations were probably entirely unrealistic, and the fact that I chose a niche that was big time saturated didn’t help either. But I will say that the few months I spent trying to create my “perfect SBI! website”, I felt like I was somehow cramped and stifled (maybe I knew more than I thought).

Sinking all of my time into building just one website seemed to be awfully restrictive, and I sure as heck couldn’t sink another $300 into this thing just to have one more site. And anyway, the more I read, the more (painfully) clear it became – even to a newbie like me – that you could do this a whole lot cheaper – if you could find anybody willing to just point you in the right direction without charging out the ying yang.

I just somehow felt that there had to be something different than this information overload called SBI! So I commenced looking again, not really believing that I would ever find the help I needed without poring even more money that I could not afford into what would most likely be just another pipe dream.

But, through hours of searching every little nook and cranny I could find, do you know what I found? I finally stumbled on the help I needed – and the most shocking part was that it was all free. No one telling me that if I would just buy their “guaranteed auto-pilot money-spitting machine”, they could make me rich overnight. None of that crap! Just honest, free information that was actually worth a fortune!

Everything I needed to know, every tool I needed to use – it was all right there in front of me and I just didn’t know how to go about finding it. And frankly, I still don’t remember exactly how I came across this 1% of the internet business owners who really are willing to openly discuss exactly how they build their businesses, attract traffic to their sites, and make money online (for free), but I am so thankful that I did. And if you’ll just look around my site, you can find out who I turn to when I need honest, informative information that I can actually use.

Think Site Build It Is For You?  I Would Think Again

My purpose for this post is not necessarily to bash SBI! – like I said, I’m sure it was my fault that it didn’t work for me (no one product works for everybody) and Site BuildIt does offer some very informative free material such as the free Affiliate Masters Course, and Make Your Knowledge Sell, as well some others.

I have also found a couple of programs that have further helped me to pull together the tons of information that I have learned along the way (that I consider money well-spent, by the way).

However, I do feel an obligation to let other people (who are where I was just a short time ago) know that you don’t have to continue to shell out this kind of money to have your own affiliate marketing business, or any other kind of online business.

With SBI!, each website that you build will cost you $300 per year, plus fees for various other add-ons (and trust me you will need many more than just one website). That is a lot of cash unless you get lucky and start making a lot of money right away. Good luck on that.

Instead, wouldn’t it make more sense to purchase your domain names for around $10 each (per year) through hosting companies like GoDaddy or HostGator, have them host your domain names for less than $10 per month (and most will host unlimited domains for that same 10 bucks), and take advantage of all the free tools available that will accomplish pretty much the same things you get with SiteBuildIt?  I’m just saying….

Before you decide to shell out your hard-earned cash, do your homework. Do a Google search for free online business building tools or check out Free Affiliate Marketing Website Tools & Training for some great free resources.

And you can get a lot of differing opinions by reading reviews like Lissie’s Site Build It Scam Review instead of relying on all of the SiteBuildIt cheerleaders who are hoping you will buy the product from them.  Wish I had seen this discussion a long time ago…..
