If you have been on the internet for any length of time, and done any research at all into making money online, you have no doubt come to the conclusion that affiliate marketing is an excellent place to start as an online business owner because of its low risk and high reward potential.

One major advantage to affiliate marketing, especially if you are new to online businesses, is the fact that you don’t have to create your own product in order to start generating some cash fairly quickly, because there are thousands of product creators and owners who are actively seeking affiliates to promote their products.

But “newbies” are not the only ones benefiting from affiliate marketing.  Some of the most successful online business owners earn a substantial part of their income from selling other people’s products or services as an affiliate. Affiliate marketing can, in fact be a very lucrative business if it is done correctly.

Choose Suitable Affiliate Programs

There are so many different types of affiliate products to choose from, that literally anybody should be able to find the kind of product that they are interested in promoting. And of course, having some knowledge about a particular product can make it easier to sell than trying to sell something that you have no knowledge of.

But before you start searching for the best affiliate marketing program, you need to determine first which type is most suitable for you and your business.  Are you only interested in pay-per-sale programs where you earn a commission on products purchased by customers that you refer to a merchant, such as digital products or tangible goods?  Or, are you more interested in some of the other types of affiliate programs such as pay-per-click or pay-per-lead?  Maybe you’d even like to try all of these methods.  That’s totally up to you.

Software programs and ebooks, known as Digital Products, are very easy to find, and you can find an ebook on virtually anything you can imagine, therefore making it easier to find one that will be suitable to promote on the website you already have, assuming you already have one. They are also instantly down-loadable upon purchase, and you don’t have the other costs that are usually associated with tangible products, such as shipping and handling.

Becoming an affiliate and promoting digital products is an easy process as there normally is no waiting period like there sometimes is with tangible goods – and the commissions payable on digital products is considerably higher than on tangible products, usually 50-75% compared to 10-25%.

If you become a regcure affiliate, for instance, you would earn a 75% commission on all of your sales for simply offering your customers the best registry cleaner on the market, which also happens to be very reasonably priced.

We will be discussing other types of affiliate marketing programs in other articles, but if you don’t have a lot of time or money to sink into your business right away, digital products are a no-brainer in the beginning. So our primary focus here will be finding and promoting digital products because of the low (or no) overhead to sell them, and higher commissions paid on them. But, ultimately you will have to decide which type of affiliate marketing business is right for you.

Above all else, you must find a product that people are interested in and are willing to buy, and we’ll talk a little bit about where to find these products, and how to get an idea of whether or not  there is a demand for them.

Where Can You Find Affiliate Programs?

The Major Affiliate Networks, such as Clickbank, function as middlemen between merchants and affiliates and are an excellent place to start looking for companies to affiliate with because they generally offer the higher-quality programs, and the signup is free. They also make it simple for you to find programs to promote through their search facilities (catalogs), and your HTML (affiliate) links and other promotional tools will be provided for you to copy and paste right into your marketing material or on your website.

You can sign up with Clickbank and immediately start promoting any of their more than 10,000 digitally delivered products, ranging from ebooks to software. Clickbank has a catalog of all their products listed by categories, subcategories, keywords and product type so that you can easily find the perfect products that are relevant to your online business.

Through the use of the search features at the Clickbank Marketplace, you can also find which products seem to be very popular right now (high affiliate gravity), and the less popular ones with less advertising exposure (lower affiliate gravity). Note however, that in some cases, those with the higher gravity rating may actually be too popular, meaning that many of the heavy hitters are already promoting them, and the market for that product will be very competitive.

So you might have a better chance at making sales if you choose the products with a gravity in the mid range, around 40- 50, and up. To get this information, just put your keywords into the search box, and the ones listed at the top of your search results, with the highest “gravity” rating, are likely the most popular ones. The following screenshot from the Clickbank Marketplace shows more clearly how the results are listed.

These results were sorted by “Popularity”, and you can see the “grav:” number  (gravity) in the bottom right corner of each listing.

Once you have carefully chosen a product that you feel would be a good complement to your website, there are some things you might want to consider in order to maximize the profits you earn for your efforts.

For instance, before you start promoting a product, you might want to visit the owner’s website, which you can do from Clickbank, and take a look at the sales page you’ll be sending your prospective customers to. Is it professionally written? Is the ordering process clearly laid out for ease of placing an order?  Would you be likely to buy from that site? If not, chances are your visitors wouldn’t either.

Other Considerations For Your Affiliate Programs

A program’s commission rates, and whether their’s is a two-tier program are a couple of the things  that are good to know when choosing an affiliate program, and you should be able to find this information out from either the Clickbank or the product owner’s websites.

Also, do they offer lifetime, or residual commissions? This means that if a customer returns to the merchant’s site and makes a second or third purchase later, you earn a commission on ALL of those purchases, as well. And in most cases, when your referral signs up for a product or service that requires recurring payments, you get a commission on each of those recurring payments for as long as your referral is a customer. Does the program offer an affiliate section on their website so that you can check your affiliate account stats 24/7?

All of these are important considerations before you choose an affiliate program.  Choosing the wrong ones can cost you a huge amount of wasted time, effort, and money, so it’s best to promote the ones you choose for a reasonable amount of time, and if you have no sales on a product, stop promoting it and look for another one.

Newcomers to Affiliate Marketing might find it easier to sell a lot of less expensive products than it is to sell the higher priced items, especially in the beginning. It makes more sense to promote a product that pays lower commissions if it is actually converting into sales, than it does to try to sell a higher commission item that nobody is buying. Many internet business owners make very decent incomes promoting the smaller “stuff”, and if you choose to take this route, you can gradually build up to the larger items later as you get more experience.

It’s Time To Monetize Your Affiliate Marketing Business!

Once you have created your Affiliate Marketing website with lots of useful, quality content for your visitors, it’s time to find some good companies whose products you want to promote, and get some affiliate links into your content so you can start earning some commissions.

At this point you should know what the topic of your website will be, and therefore the kinds of products you will most likely be promoting.  You can do a search to find lots of companies to consider by entering “your topic + affiliate programs” into the search box.  For instance, if your website is about shoes, you would enter “shoes + affiliate programs”.

Generally speaking, you’ll want to look for reputable companies with excellent products that are relevant to your site’s theme. And as tempting as it may be to choose only the companies that pay the highest commissions (or whatever the mode of payment is), it’s important to know what the conversion rate is for a product or service.

If the company pays well but their product/service isn’t selling, you’re probably not going to make a lot of money with them.  However, if the commissions are lower, but the product is a good seller, your chances of making a decent income are increased.

Find out whether or not the company offers life-time – or at least long-term – referrals (‘cookies’). If a visitor comes to your site – likes a product or service you offer, but decides not to buy until sometime in the future – will you still get credit for that purchase?

A good program will provide excellent training tools and resources such as banner ads for their affiliates. Ideally, they should have a member’s area where you can log in and grab promotional materials, your links, and also check your stats and commissions.

Note that even though many websites continue to display lots of flashy banners on their websites, it’s becoming more common for webmasters to use more text ads than banners.  The choice will be up to you, and it’s a good idea to try it both ways and see what works best for you.

Good Communication Is Important

The best affiliate program will respond to your questions in a timely manner. But – by the same token – a good affiliate will make sure they read all the materials provided on the website before contacting the program/merchant.

When you join their affiliate program (for free) the company will in turn assign unique-to-you URL links to place on your website. These links will let the merchant know when a visitor to your site has clicked through to them and made a purchase.

Affiliate Networks

These networks function as middlemen between merchants and you – the affiliate – and are another great place to find suitable merchants to affiliate with. One of the larger Affiliate Networks – Clickbank – is a huge retailer for digitally delivered products such as ebooks and software, and has a vast inventory of products for you to choose from to promote… Or you can just link directly to the Clickbank Marketplace if you so choose.

You can do a search from the Marketplace by category or by keywords, and choose Clickbank affiliate programs that are suitable for your site. If you haven’t signed up for a free Clickbank account yet, you can do that here. It’s free and easy, and only takes a couple of minutes.

Where appropriate – it is always a good idea to purchase and use the products that you plan to promote so that you can give an accurate review of all it’s features – good and bad. Customers appreciate honest feedback and will be more likely to buy from you if you give them good quality information and honest reviews. This will help to promote trust – and your customer will be much more likely to come back and visit you in the future.

Advertisements and Google AdSense

If you’re promoting an ebook, or other product from your site and sending your customers to a sales page, be weary of sales pages with all sorts of ads all over them. Your efforts will most likely just be spent wasting your own traffic.

Google Ads on your own website or blog can be a very powerful source of revenue – but sales pages that you send your customers to are probably not the best placement for them. If you haven’t signed up for a free Google Ads account yet, you can click on the link and sign up now.

High Sales Minimum

Watch out for programs that ask you to sell a certain amount before you get paid. For example – the commission on a $20 book is 10% (or $2 per sale) and the company’s policy is to send out checks only when the affiliate has accumulated a minimum of $200 in commissions.

You’d have to sell a boatload of books (100 – to be exact) before getting paid one dime, which may be fine if you have a lot of targeted traffic that is converting to sales, but if not you may have to wait a while (if ever) before you see any affiliate checks.

Some of these programs operate on the theory that most affiliates will not make that many sales, so they’ll never need to pay out. It’s unfortunate – but this does happen.

Always read the Terms of Agreement (they DO have one, don’t they?) before signing up for any affiliate program. It’s important to know what their rules and guidelines are before you commit.  (More on Finding The Best Affiliate Marketing Programs).

And finally, selling other people’s stuff is not the only way to monetize your new Affiliate Marketing website, and we’ll be covering some of the other ways in later installments of the Affiliate Marketing Guide.

regcure registry cleanerLet RegCure – The Best Registry Cleaner On The Market – Scan Your PC For Free!

Anyone who has an online business, such as an Affiliate Marketing business as we are focusing on at this website, or even if you use your PC only for personal reasons, sooner or later you will be affected by registry problems.

If your computer has started running sluggishly or you’re noticing problems like computer freezing, slow internet speeds, unexplained error messages and other problems – it’s important to find and eliminate the causes.

More often than not – files and programs that have cluttered and damaged your registry are causing your computer to misbehave – and it will only get worse. They don’t go away on their own, but there are steps you can take to correct problems associated with your PC’s  registry.

While I don’t profess to know a lot about a PC registry or any of the inner “workings” of a computer, I knew when my PC began having all sorts of problems – including slowing down to a crawl – that I had problems and needed to find something to take care of the mess (other than paying a fortune to have a professional do it for me).

Fortunately, I remembered reading somewhere about the RegCure registry cleaner and that they would scan your PC for free and find out what kinds of problems were present in your registry – so I looked it up and decided to download and try it.

I was so impressed right off with the ease of using RegCure (I’m partial to “easy”) and after just one scan, the performance of my PC was greatly improved. RegCure had found and automatically fixed almost 2000 problems on my PC. No wonder I was having problems !

I knew that I had made the right choice with RegCure, but I was delighted a few weeks later when ZDNet had an article from RegistryCleanerGuide.org, comparing 5 of the top registry cleaners – and RegCure was #1.

RegCure’s software will scan your computer and find invalid registry entries and fix them on the spot. In fact, it will usually find and fix hundreds of problems on average per user – and the performance of your PC will be significantly improved after just one scan.

It’s important to take care of your registry to avoid all kinds of problems with your PC, especially if you use your PC primarily for your home-based business.  Time is money, and a computer running at a snail’s pace can really waste a lot of valuable time.  RegCure Registry Cleaner can find and correct the problems causing the slow down, and have your PC up and running quickly and smoothly again in just minutes.

On a side note, after purchasing and trying the RegCure registry cleaner myself, and realizing what a great product it is, it seemed a no-brainer to become a RegCure affiliate and offer another great product to visitors to my site.  If you have your own affiliate marketing business and are looking for some excellent products to promote (that people actually need and use), I invite you to join the RegCure affiliate program with me. You won’t find a better registry cleaner affiliate program anywhere!

For anyone who is new to doing business on the Internet, even the basics of getting started in your own web-based business can be daunting. Obviously there is much more to it than can be included here, but this Affiliate Marketing Guide series can serve as a very basic outline of the process.

In its simplest terms, Affiliate Marketing means selling other people’s products or services online – either from your own website or one provided by the merchant. Bring a merchant and a buyer together and you’re paid a commission for your efforts.

Affiliate marketing is similar to offline commission-based sales – except that all of your business is conducted online, and there are several different kinds of affiliate marketing programs which we will be covering in other articles.

Although affiliate marketing is considered to be the quickest and easiest way to start a business online – one that levels the playing field for everybody – as you’ll learn early on, there is quite a bit of time and effort involved. Once you have built your affiliate marketing business – you must be patient and persistent. It takes time and effort to build trust and make sales.

Niche Affiliate Marketing

Your first priority, if you haven’t done so already – should be to find a market – or “niche” that you have a passion for – or that you’re at least willing to learn a lot about. Almost anywhere you look on the Internet nowadays, you’ll see something about Niche Affiliate Marketing. In fact, some of the biggest names on the net swear by it – and some don’t of course.

A great tool to help you in this area is Ken Evoy’s free affiliate marketing ebook, Affiliate Masters Course. This is an instantly down-loadable ebook that has some very solid advice on carving out a niche that is perfect for you. The ebook is a 10-day course in which you are taken step-by-step through creating a very profitable online business – from beginning to end. And did I mention it’s free?

There are countless ways to find ideas for a profitable niche market. Look around your house, take note of things you see while traveling, brainstorm different ideas and see what you can come up with that you think would be a good idea for a website. Two sites that can give you a lot of ideas are ehow.com and Google Trends, and of course there are many more.

You can do a search on “how to”, using the Google Adwords Tool and get an idea of what people are looking for information on. The list of places to find ideas goes on and on, but these should keep you busy for awhile.

Check The Competition…

Once you have come up with an idea for a niche market you feel comfortable with, it’s a good idea to check the competition for that market to make sure the area you’ve chosen isn’t so competitive that it would be next to impossible to get your site seen in the search engines.

For instance, there are almost as many websites designed to give people the how-to’s of affiliate marketing  for beginners as there are affiliate marketers themselves. So, depending on what topic you choose – the competition can be tough.  Choosing a very competitive niche – or topic – will be much more time and labor-intensive  than one that is less saturated, and when you go up against the gurus who have been honing their websites over long periods of time, it can be a battle to rank for your keywords.

You can use the free tools listed below to check keywords and phrases associated with your chosen topic to get a feel for how many people are actually interested in – and searching for – that information, as well as how many sites already offer that information. You will also then have a list of good keywords to create your content around. The tools can also help you find some less competitive markets and to give you some ideas as to what might be a good area to target:

Google Adwords: Keyword Tool

Wordtracker’s Keyword Suggestion Tool

Keyword Playground

These tools are very simple to use and understand – and you can quickly get a feel for how many people are looking for your key phrases. There are others that are fee-based and that are much more sophisticated than the free ones, but these will get you started.

If there’s fairly low demand for your market – but high supply – you may need to look into another niche – or perhaps narrow down the one you’ve already chosen. For instance – if your chosen niche is Dogs – maybe you could narrow that down to German Shepherds (or whatever breed you choose).

Once you have established the topic you want to build your business around – your niche – then it’s time to start building your keyword/content-rich, theme-based website or blog, which we will be covering in the Affiliate Marketing Guide – Part 2. (Monetizing your site will come a little later).
